Pasteurization of Breast Milk refers to the process of heating collected breast milk to eliminate potentially harmful pathogens while preserving its nutritional components and immune properties as much as possible. This process typically involves heating the milk to 62.5°C (144.5°F) for 30 minutes, followed by rapid cooling to below 4°C (39.2°F) for storage.
Pasteurization is primarily used for providing breast milk to premature infants or those with compromised immune systems, as these babies are at higher risk of infection. It effectively reduces the bacterial load in breast milk, minimizing infection risk, though it may slightly decrease certain sensitive immune factors and vitamins. Despite this, pasteurized breast milk remains a vital source of nutrition for these special infants, superior to formula. For healthy, full-term infants, pasteurization is generally not recommended, as breast milk possesses natural antibacterial properties.
The technology of freeze-drying breast milk into powder, also known as vacuum freeze-drying or lyophilization, involves removing water from liquid breast milk at low temperatures and pressures. First, fresh breast milk is rapidly frozen below its freezing point, causing its water content to form ice crystals. Then, under vacuum conditions, the principle of sublimation is utilized to directly convert these ice crystals into water vapor, bypassing the liquid phase.
This process requires low temperatures to preserve the nutritional components and active factors in breast milk, such as antibodies, growth factors, and enzymes. Finally, the dried breast milk powder is sealed for packaging. The advantage of this technique lies in its ability to maximally retain the natural nutritional value and biological activity of breast milk.
